Interpretation of necropsy results:

The main finding on necropsy is that of multiple myeloma, a cancer of the immune system (plasma cells) which invades the bone marrow causing destruction of the bones.  The 12th thoracic, 2nd and 5th lumbar vertebrae were affected by this process.  In this case the cancer had also spread to the liver, spleen and lymph nodes, demonstrable on microscopic examination of these tissues.  There were also secondary changes in the lungs that can be attributable to the presence of cancer/disease in the body but not a primary lung disorder per se.

There are changes in the liver that are related to oxygen depravation due to “thick” blood caused by the cancer.  This lack of proper oxygenation to the tissues is likely the cause of the seizures that Emma was experiencing prior to her euthanasia.

In addition to the cancer spread in the liver there was also evidence of some aging changes (fibrosis) that may have compromised the function slightly but were not likely of clinical significance.

There was mild arthritis present in the left elbow.

There was no evidence of either lumbosacral stenosis or GSD degenerative myelopathy.

There is no evidence of primary disease of the digestive system, endocrine system, heart, skin, pancreas, eyes or neurological system.
